Get creative when making this pirate spyglass at home. All sorts of treasures may appear at the other end. Adventure awaits, amigos.
What You’ll Need
- 3 toilet paper tubes
- Blue & gold paint
- Paintbrushes
- Tape
- Ribbon
- Clear plastic (optional)
- Markers (optional)
How to Create:
Step 1: Paint two tubes blue and one tube gold. Let dry.
Step 2: Cut a slit down the middle of one blue painted tube and the gold painted tube.
Step 3: Make the telescope lens. Fit the cut blue tube inside of the uncut blue tube by rolling it slightly thinner and securing with tape. Repeat with the gold tube.
Step 4: Tape a piece of ribbon inside the tubes, letting the ribbon run through the middle of the spyglass. This will keep the three tubes together, making it possible for the tube to retract without falling apart.
You can stop here and you’ll have a wonderful spyglass but if you want to take it a step further:
Step 5: Trace and cut out a piece of plastic the size of the widest end of the spyglass. Decorate the plastic circle with nautical imagery — a treasure chest, a pirate ship, a deserted island — and attach with tape. This is what your kids will see when they look through the spyglass!
Step 6: Embellish the outside with decorations just like Santiago’s magic spyglass!
Now your little ones are ready to go hunt for some treasure!
